Many months have passed since the Battle of Earth. One of the conflict’s participants, Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, has attempted to move on with his life to the best of his ability. During this time, he begins harboring feelings for a classmate named Michelle Jones, though she prefers to go by MJ. His school has organized a two-week summer trip to Europe, which Peter sees as the perfect opportunity to confess his feelings. Unfortunately for him, he may find a relaxing getaway is not in his future when he receives a phone call from Nick Fury.
The Avengers have been called to the Eastern European country of Sokovia. They are an all-star superhero team consisting of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, and Clint Barton. They have been asked to raid a facility owned by an elite terrorist organization known as Hydra. The commander’s name is Wolfgang von Stucker. There, they are besieged by two of Stucker’s test subjects: Pietro Maximoff and Wanda Maximoff. The former possesses superhuman speed while the latter is both telepathic and telekinetic. Regardless, the Avengers are able to apprehend Strucker and retrieve what they’ve been looking for: Loki’s scepter.
Nick Fury, the director of espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., along with his lieutenant Maria Hill, arrive at a remote research facility. There, Dr. Erik Selvig is leading an investigation on an object of great power known as the Tesseract. Agent Phil Coulson explains to them that it has been radiating a strange energy as of late. The Tesseract suddenly opens a wormhole from which a being of unknown origin emerges. He identifies himself as Loki, the Asgardian god of deceit and trickery from Norse mythology. Arriving to subjugate the planet Earth and the humans who dwell upon it, Loki seizes the Tesseract and uses his scepter to enslave Dr. Selvig and various agents, including the expert marksman Clint Barton. Realizing the threat Loki poses, Fury activates a defense plan seventeen years in the making: the Avengers Initiative.
Starforce member Vers of the Kree Empire has been suffering from recurring nightmares. Through brief glimpses, she sees an older woman, though the meaning behind these visions eludes her. Her mentor and commanding officer, Yon-Rogg, trains her to control her abilities, reminding her to suppress her emotions in battle. She and the rest of her team are sent on a mission to rescue an undercover operative who has infiltrated a faction of Skrulls. The Skrulls are alien shapeshifters warring with the Kree. Their commander, Talos, captures Vers during the mission. She manages to escape from their ship in an escape pod, but crash-lands on a planet named Earth.
